EBO 2026 Exam Announcement

In 2026, the EBO will be running two examinations for those seeking to achieve the European Board of Ophthalmology Diploma:

  • Spring examin person in Paris on 8 May 2026 (limited seats — please apply early to avoid disappointment)
  • Autumn examonline on Friday, 16 October 2026

Spring exam (Paris): Applications open 1 October 2025 and close when capacity has been reached or on 15 December 2025 at 18:00 CET, whichever comes first.

Autumn exam (online): Applications open 20 March 2026 and close 20 May 2026 at 18:00 CEST.

Please ensure that you apply on time. Late application requests will not be considered.

For online exams, a remote-proctoring system will be used (a third-party service that will monitor candidates taking exams through their devices). Applicants should ensure that their device and broadband connection are capable of taking an examination online. Most modern laptops (Windows 10+ or Apple Mac) should be adequate, and a test will be provided so you can check in advance.

  • Please note there is a limited capacity of places for the EBO Exam. Therefore, in the event of high demand a “first come, first served” policy will be implemented. It is in your interest to submit your application urgently.
  • Please ensure you read the examination eligibility criteria in advance of completing your application —

  • Please select the application link according to your qualification status (Specialist/Resident).
    Specialist applicants must be a Specialist at the time of application.
    Resident applicants must have begun the final year of residency at the time of the EBO examination.
  • German Specialists are required to upload a copy of their Specialist certification during the application stage.
  • French Specialists are required to upload a copy of their CV during the application stage.
  • Polish Specialists: candidates applying from Poland must comply with national statutory deadlines regarding the validity of their residency training.
    Candidates currently in residency training are eligible to apply under standard EBO regulations.
    However, applicants who have already completed their residency training must accurately declare their completion date.

    Those who completed their training more than 5 years prior to the date of the EBO examination must submit a formal
    “Certificate of Eligibility” or an official decision from the Centre for Medical Examinations (CEM / Centrum Egzaminów Medycznych).
    Applications without this validation will not be processed.

  • Spanish Residents are required to upload a copy of their CV during the application stage.
  • Spanish Specialists are required to upload a copy of their CV and Specialist Diploma during the application stage.
  • UK Residents are required to upload your training number and Deanery during the application stage.
  • UK Specialists are required to upload your General Medical Council Specialist Registration number during the application stage.
  • All Residents are required to upload an approval letter from their programme chair / Head of Department during the application stage.

  • Please note you will be required to upload your photo during the application process (head-and-shoulders, passport style, JPEG).
  • Residents from EBO accredited centres will have a reduced exam fee of €400.
  • Please respond to all email correspondence regarding the exam without delay.
  • The fee to sit the 2026 EBO exams is €600 and is non-refundable and non-transferable.
    No refunds/transfers will be processed.
  • The EBO 2026 exam is published in English only.

Spring Exam — In person in Paris (8 May 2026): Exam application

Paris onsite: MCQ/SBA on tablets provided by EBO, VV face to face with 2 examiners, English language.

Applications open: 1 October 2025

Application deadline: when capacity has been reached or on 15 December 2025 at 18:00 CET, whichever comes first.

Spring Exam Applications: NOW CLOSED

Applications are not confirmed until the approval process has been completed.
Applicants will be informed of the outcome by the end of February 2026.

Autumn Exam — Online (16 October 2026): Exam application

Electronic Autumn exam: MCQ/SBA and CC at home on the candidate’s computer, English language.

Applications: Open 20 March 2026 and close 20 May 2026 at 18:00 CEST.
